Cashfulness or YNAB? It depends on what you want to know about your money
YNAB tells you where every dollar should go before you spend it. Cashfulness tells you what you own, what you owe and what you earned, with the accounting method companies have used for five centuries.
Data and prices checked on
If what you want is a budgeting method, with envelopes to fill at the start of the month and a coach that teaches you four rules, YNAB does it better than anyone and has for years. If what you want is the truth about your finances, a balance sheet with your assets and debts and an income statement with what came in and what went out, Cashfulness is built for that: every entry is double-entry, so the books balance by construction, not by goodwill.
The other differences are practical. YNAB costs $109 a year, in dollars, and works in English on phone and in the browser. Cashfulness costs 57.99 euro a year for Premium, speaks 45 languages, runs natively on Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone and Android, and never asks for your bank login: you enter what you spend, or import a CSV from your bank.
a year for YNAB, billed in US dollars and before tax; Cashfulness Premium is 57.99 euro a year, VAT included.

Where YNAB is better
The method. YNAB is a philosophy of money with an app attached: four rules, live workshops, a large community. If you want to be taught how to budget, start there.
Bank import in the United States and Canada. If you live there and want transactions to flow in on their own, YNAB does it and Cashfulness does not.
Sharing included. YNAB Together lets up to six people share one subscription; in Cashfulness collaborators are an Ultra feature.
A browser app. YNAB works from any computer without installing anything. Cashfulness is a native app you install.
Budget first, or books first
YNAB starts from the future: you assign the money you have to categories before you spend it, and the app keeps you honest about it. It is a discipline, and for many people it is exactly the discipline that works.
Cashfulness starts from the present: every expense, every income, every transfer is an entry with a debit and a credit, so your accounts always reconcile. From those entries the app builds the two reports companies live by, the balance sheet and the income statement. Budgets exist too, with thresholds and alerts, but they sit on top of the books, not in place of them.
What "no bank linking" means in practice
Cashfulness never connects to your bank. You type an expense in a few seconds from the quick entry bar, or you import your bank statement as CSV once a month and reconcile it. It is a deliberate choice: no third party sees your transactions, and the app works the same in every country.
For YNAB users outside the US and Canada this is less of a difference than it sounds: there, YNAB has no direct import either, and the workflow is the same manual entry.
Switching from YNAB
Export your YNAB register as CSV and import it into Cashfulness: accounts and categories map onto the chart of accounts, and the opening balances are set on the date you choose. Your envelopes do not carry over, because Cashfulness does not have envelopes; your history does.
Questions people ask
Is Cashfulness a YNAB alternative?
For tracking what you earn, spend, own and owe, yes, and it goes further with real double-entry books. For the zero-based envelope method as a discipline, YNAB remains the reference.
Does Cashfulness connect to my bank like YNAB?
No, by design. You enter transactions by hand or import a CSV from your bank. YNAB's direct import works only for US and Canadian banks anyway.
How much does Cashfulness cost compared to YNAB?
Premium is 5.99 euro a month or 57.99 a year, VAT included; Ultra is 9.99 or 95.99. YNAB is $14.99 a month or $109 a year, plus tax. Cashfulness also has a free plan up to 200 entries or 60 days.
Can I share Cashfulness with my partner?
Yes, with the Ultra plan: up to four collaborators per accounting space, each with full or partial visibility. YNAB includes sharing for up to six people in every subscription.
Does Cashfulness work on a computer?
Yes, as a native app on Windows, macOS and Linux, plus iPhone and Android. YNAB on a computer is the web app in a browser.
