Double-entry for households

Which double-entry app for your household finances?

Double-entry bookkeeping for private people is not new, and Cashfulness is not the only app that does it. Here are the ones that do it seriously, with what each one is good at.

Data and prices checked on

If you want double-entry on your computer, for free, and you are not afraid of a steep start, GnuCash has been the reference since 1998 and AloxBook is the new, friendlier desktop option. If you want it on your phone for a few euro, Money Manager by Realbyte has done it for ten million people. If you want a professional accounting engine with a household template, Banana Accounting has done that since 1989, on every platform, for one user at a time.

Cashfulness is the one that puts the pieces together: double-entry books with a balance sheet and an income statement, native apps on Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone and Android, 45 languages, 32 currencies with automatic rates, shared accounting spaces with permissions, encrypted documents, and a price of 57.99 euro a year. No single piece is unique; the combination is what you will not find elsewhere, as far as we could verify.

GnuCash 5.17, aloxbook.com and the Italian App Store read on 16 October 2026. Banana prices from the official price list read on 9 August 2026 (Professional, 89 CHF a year VAT included; the free plan is limited to 70 entries); the price pages did not respond on 16 October.

Where the others are better

  • Price: GnuCash and AloxBook are free, and Money Manager costs a few euro once. If you do not need sync or sharing, that is hard to beat.

  • Offline: GnuCash, Banana and AloxBook keep the books in a file on your disk and never need a connection. Cashfulness needs one to sync.

  • Depth for business: GnuCash and Banana also do invoices, VAT and small-business accounting. Cashfulness is for households and does not pretend otherwise.

  • Longevity: GnuCash since 1998, Banana since 1989. Cashfulness launched on 14 October 2026.

Coming from GnuCash

This is the move we built for. Cashfulness imports your whole GnuCash file, or starts from a date you choose with the opening balances of every account, so nothing is lost and nothing has to be retyped. Your chart of accounts arrives as it is, and from then on you can add entries from your phone.

A tester who made the switch, Andrea, put it this way: "At first I kept updating GnuCash alongside Cashfulness, but it is so convenient and well made that I have stopped, which tells me that, at least for me, you hit the mark."

What double-entry gives you, in plain words

Every movement of money has a source and a destination: the salary comes from an income account into your bank account, the groceries go from your bank account into an expense account, the mortgage payment goes from the bank account partly into the debt and partly into interest. When every entry is written that way, two things follow: the books cannot be out of balance, and you get a true balance sheet, with what you own and what you owe, next to a true income statement.

Cashfulness hides the jargon: you write an expense like in any app and the debit and credit are recorded for you. But the method underneath is the real one, the same one in GnuCash and Banana.

One user, or the whole household

Most double-entry apps are built around a file, and a file belongs to one person. Banana says so in writing: one person at a time can edit it. Cashfulness is built around an accounting space you can invite people into, with full or partial visibility, on any platform. For a couple or a family that keeps one set of books, this is the difference that matters most.

Questions people ask

Is Cashfulness the only personal finance app with double-entry?

No. GnuCash, Banana, AloxBook, Money Manager and others keep double-entry books. What we could not find elsewhere is the combination: double-entry, native apps on five platforms, 45 languages, multi-currency with automatic rates, family sharing and an app-level price.

Can I import my GnuCash file?

Yes. Cashfulness imports the whole file, or starts from a date with opening balances. The chart of accounts comes through as it is.

Do I need to know accounting?

No. You enter an expense as amount and category; the app writes the debit and the credit. If you want to see them, they are there.

Which free double-entry app should I choose?

On a computer, GnuCash if you want depth and do not mind the learning curve, AloxBook if you want something simpler. Neither has a phone app or sync. Cashfulness is free up to 200 entries or 60 days, then 57.99 euro a year.

Does Cashfulness work without internet?

It needs a connection to sync between devices and to save your entries safely. GnuCash, Banana and AloxBook work fully offline, with the books in a local file.
